241: "Not Dead Yet" With Weldon Dodd of Rewind Tech - Denver, CO

Topics:

-To start the new year, we are very pleased to be joined on our first live show of 2018 by Weldon Dodd of Rewind Technology in Denver, CO.  Weldon hangs with the crew as another host in case Sam goes missing again.
https://rewindtech.com

-Some things never change, the old HCS land grab jokes are in full swing

-Joe discusses the first zero day exploit of 2018, actually launched via tweet on New Year's Eve. Check out the IOHIDeous narrative on GitHub, kind of interesting! The vulnerability exists in a process called IOHIDUserClient which the macOS limits to having only a single instance at any given time, which happens to be spawned by WindowServer. So in order to exploit the vulnerability, we need to kill the WindowServer process. But terminating it requires admin privileges and essentially reboots the GUI, so this is not a viable mode of exploitation. But it turns out that by logging out the user, WindowServer releases its IOHIDUserClient temporarily, giving the exploit enough time to spawn its own instance of IOHIDUserClient and leverage it to compromise the system. The exploit can use "launchctl reboot logout" which does not display a warning dialog. The exploit can also use an AppleScript command to send loginwindow an event called "AppleEventReallyLogOut" (osascript -e 'tell application "loginwindow" to «event aevtrlgo»'), and loginwindow apparently doesn't care who sent the event, but it does display a dialog box as if the user selected "Log Out" from the Apple menu.

-Jerry wonders if this will be on the CCP test

-Sam recalls a story working after hours at a client when the alarm goes off

-Weldon shares his story of a Promise RAID gone wrong. Friends don't let clients pull drives out of RAID drive bays.  It also leads to a further discussion about how to handle RAID solutions and future expansion.

-A handy virtualization app for Synology, which Sam has used in conjunction with CrashPlan, is Docker: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/docker

-Jerry is busy building Minecraft worlds on Synology. He ends up needing a volume formatted as Btrfs.  Read more here: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/Btrfs

-Time Machine and Synology has had a spotty past

-Sam discusses a Wi-Fi upgrade in NYC and replaced aging equipment with Ubiquiti Unifi. He also has some advice on utilizing a Cloud Key.

-He also mentions a handy workaround to test network settings remotely while still needing to reconnect to the remote computer.  Joe recalls a similar solution for another problem.

- Joe's positive LSD story:
A Possitive LSD Story on The News - Bill Hicks on Drugs.

iMac 27-inch Retina 5K initially failed to log into user, finally logged into user but app icons were generic, apps wouldn't open, system very slow; after deleting user account, preserving home folder, and then recreating user account and reclaiming home folder, the user account would log in and work properly but system wouldn't restart or shut down, getting stuck on black screen with arrow cursor; system log showed repeating messages about com.apple.lsd process crashing; tried safe boot and re-installing 10.11.6 with no luck; tried rebuilding LaunchServices using the following command with no change:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -r

Thanks to Apple discussion forums, Joe learned a command to list the open files associated with a given process:
pgrep -u `id -u` lsd | xargs slof -p
which listed a file in /private/var/folders/kv/2kk40mdv5wdccq6hb7y3rgk80000gn/0/com.apple.LaunchServices-134501.csstore

Deleting that file didn't work, but after researching whether it was OK to delete folders in /private/var/folders/, Joe deleted everything inside /private/var/folders/ and restarted. Sure enough, the system restarted successfully and has worked properly ever since.

- Field Service Kit Conductive Pvc with 6Feet Wrist Strap&10Feet Ground

- Joe tells backstory of Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15-inch that would initially recognize OWC SSD, format it, install an OS, and migrate user data to it.. then a week later, the user started having spontaneous shutdowns; we determined the SSD was unmounting; ordered an RMA, and the new SSD could be formatted but then upon installing an OS, it would present an error that the download may have been damaged, this was with a known-good OS installer on a USB flash drive; we could check in Disk Utility and see the SSD had unmounted; we put the same SSD into a different machine of the same exact vintage and it worked fine, so we traded with the company and it's been fine ever since; put an Apple SSD into the problematic MacBook Pro and it worked, although we still don't entirely trust the machine. That was in November, several months ago

- fast forward to a few weeks ago, we installed an OWC SSD into a Mid 2011 iMac, and we has the exact same symptoms of the MacBook Pro problem: SSD would format, but OS wouldn't install. Ordered an RMA SSD along with temperature sensor cable per OWC recommendation and it worked great. This was after installing an OWC SSD into the same model iMac one week prior which worked fine and uses SSDfancontrol software instead of temperature sensor cable

- we built up the confidence to attempt an SSD upgrade in the Late 2012 iMac. Opening it went well thanks to parts and tools from iFixit, and guidance from JD Strong. OWC SSD exhibited same problem again, but this time it may have been due to the installer issue due to Apple's certificate expiration; so we installed a Samsung SSD and it worked great. New standard practice.

PSA on servicing 2012 and newer iMacs from last nights live show…_
Heat guns and iMacs should *never* cross paths. The heat can damage the IPS display panel, and also ruin the e-coating on the glass.

The _adhesive_ is more a double-stick foam tape know to Apple as VHB (Very High-Bond Adhesive). _Cutting_ the foam is the best way to get into these. Be careful using guitar picks as you can lose them inside the machine, or go to deep and hit a cable. Cutting wheels are the best, but you’ll only get a few uses out of each wheel. Go slow, and be sure to use painters or clear packing tape to hold the bottom of the glass to the chin of the iMac.
When reassembling the iMac, use care when setting the panel to the chin, we’ve had the glass break on us (or chip).
Apply the new adhesive strips to the iMac frame before mating the bottom of the panel to the iMac chin. Again, use painters or clear packing tape to hold the bottom of the glass while you reattach cables and then remove the outside adhesive backing.
If you’re not sure, find an AASP to work with at https://locate.apple.com .
